Jay Chun, M.D., Ph.D.

Dr.Chun completed his MD and PhD at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York City. At the University of California at San Francisco he performed his residency in Neurological Surgery. At Emory Clinic in Atlanta he participated in subspecialty training as well as being on the faculty in the discipline of Complex and Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery.

While a member of the Columbia faculty, Dr.Chun worked in the field of biotechnology. He has received many honors including Medical Research Fellowships from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) working with the late Nobel Prize Laureate Marshall Nirenberg. He received his Ph.D. with Richard Axel, a recipient of 2004 Nobel Prize. In honor of his stem cell research he was awarded NIH Individual Nation Research Service Award.

In addition, he has been invited to present his clinical and research papers at American Association of Neurological Surgeons and Congress of Neurological Surgeons conferences. He was the recipient of the AANS Best Resident Paper Award addressing role of Stem cells in neurosurgical diseases. He has authored many peer review articles in prominent neurosurgical journals.

Dr. Chun’s clinical and research interests encompass the treatment of spinal disorders using innovative and cutting edge technology. He combines latest science to the clinical treatment of neurosurgical issues. He specializes in Complex and Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery as well as Artificial Discs. Minimally invasive spine surgery involves the performance of surgery through small incision(s). This innovative type of surgery allows patients to recover quickly while minimizing post operative pain. This procedure is done on an outpatient basis. Dr Chun with fellow collegue Dr. John Knightly, handles more minimally invasive spine surgery cases than anyone else in the state of NJ. In addition, his experience includes spinal artificial discs to maintain spinal motion; one of only few surgeons in the country to have performed such procedures. He is the only surgeon in NJ to have performed cervical artificial disc replacement.

In addition to specializing in treatment of spinal disorders, his practice encompass general neurosurgery including brain and pituitary tumors as well as skull base surgery. His expertise include performing brain surgery with intraoperative brain cortical mapping to minimize complications while maximizing outcome. He trained at UCSF which is a leader in the treatment of brain tumors. Dr. Chun is one of the few doctors on the East Coast to work with the revolutionary tool, the Cyberknife. The Cyberknife enables physicians to treat both brain and spinal tumors which was previously inoperable. It also offers an option of non invasive treatment. Overlook Hospital in Summit is one of only few hospitals in the country that offers this advanced technology.
