Endovascular Surgery

By treating neurovascular conditions from inside the blood vessel via a catheter, our physicians offer the least invasive and most current treatment options available to appropriate patients. Endovascular therapies can be effective for aneurysm, arteriovenous malformation, carotid stenosis, intracerebral hemorrhage, cerebral vasospasm after subarachnoid hemorrhage, and occlusive extra-/intracranial vessel disease.

Our endovascular neurosurgeons were among the first in the area to use many of these techniques. Endovascular therapies are performed in the neuroangiography suite by endovascular specialists. Procedures include:

  • Carotid angioplasty and stenting is one of the newest treatments performed for our patients with carotid stenosis who are not candidates for surgery, due to age or risk factors. Preliminary data from a nationwide study comparing endarterectomy and angioplasty/stenting for high-risk patients indicates that angioplasty and stenting are more effective and have fewer side effects for this group of patients. These techniques also can be used in patients who have radiation-induced restenosis, or high-riding carotid bifurcation.
  • Embolization uses coils, balloons, beads and adhesives to block off the blood supply to an artery. Embolization techniques can repair aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations, carotid-cavernous fistulas, dural arteriovenous fistulas, spinal arteriovenous malformations, Intracranial angioplasty and stenting can be effective in treating intracranial stenosis to prevent stroke. Physicians at Atlantic Neurosurgical Specialists are among a small group nationwide using angioplasty and stents to increase blood flow and decrease the chance of stroke. These therapies also can be effective in treating vasospasm after subarachnoid hemorrhage and epistaxis.
  • Intra-operative angiography provides real-time, immediate feedback to physicians during surgery, helping to improve accuracy and outcomes.

In addition to the treatment of hemorrhagic stroke through the Embolization technique we are the leader in treatment of ischemic stroke. We currently treat stroke at the 3 major comprehensive stroke centers in NJ. Utilizing the groundbreaking mechanical thrombectomy devices we are able to extract the clot during the actual stroke to  restore blood flow and preserve brain tissue giving the patient the chance for recovery from this devastating condition
